Music appreciation

Some people like music, they really and truly like it.  I find that I enjoy a very diverse mixture of music and I really enjoy the music itself.  Conversely I know many people who "only listen to country" or "only listen to rap" or "only listen to alternative" the truth is they simply like what music portrays or identifying in a culture they idealize in their mind.  Which I suppose is fine if you're that shallow. For me music is too important in my life, to have a close relationship that compromises this intellectual and spiritual connection.  Do you like music or do you like the ideas certain genres portray?
